Renard, Charles

(1847-1905)
   military officer and engineer
   Born in Damblain, Vosges, Charles Renard constructed a dirigible balloon, La France, the first such to make a circuit round trip (about seven kilometer in 1884), powered by an electrically rotated propeller. interested in aviation, Renard published numerous works dealing with aerodynamics, vertical flight, airship motors, and dirigibles. He also conceived of a series of numbers (Renard Series) constituting a base for normalization, also much used in the air industries.
